The interpretation of vestiges

The work of Youngjoo Kim, observed from the perspective of an architecture designer, resembles our urban culture in the ways that a pencil leaves lines in its path, and the vestiges of the lines, which emerge as they are erased, are connected together. The culture of urban architecture in Korea is positioned within recurring acts of violent destruction and regeneration induced by collective hypnosis, so-called economic or social needs, and forms its own culture in that violent environment. Likewise, the work of Youngjoo Kim is well-aligned with Korean urban culture and its aesthetic in respect to how the presence of Kim’s work becomes evident within the repeated process of effacing the numerous lines drawn on paper to recompose the work.

.....

The work of Youngjoo Kim demonstrates the flow of language and a sense of connection drawn out of the process, rather than displaying the outcomes. The process can be represented as our traces, and the outcomes produced in the process are mingled together to bring out unintended results at times, constantly creating friction with our lives. Youngjoo Kim’s work offers me a peculiar experience that sparks a new appetite concerning values, the norm of a process which had been, to me, tedium and uncertainty, neglected.

Reciting my feelings on the processes observed in the world of Youngjoo Kim in writing this essay, I am convinced that the ambiguity as well as the common ground of the boundary between disciplines, a sense of separation called a field, are, in fact, saying the same thing in different languages. These feelings even further heighten my expectation for Youngjoo Kim’s next stage.
